News: Blues Agree to Terms with Krug on 7-Year Contract

October 2020 saw the St. Louis Blues agreeing a
7-year contract with Torey Krug worth $45.5 million. The deal signed is worth $6.5 million annually, which is the same average annual value he was recently offered by the Boston Bruins. The deal may have shaken the hockey world in the early days; however, fans such as John Quarenghi believe the deal represents an important step forwards for the St. Louis Blues.

Importance of the Signing

For quite some time, St. Louis has not appeared to be a desirable destination for free agents, for either the Blues or the Cardinals. However, the team’s luck has changed this year as the St. Louis Blues were able to sign one of the biggest names on the market.

Signing this contract with Torey Krug shows the rest of the National Hockey League that the St. Louis Blues are a force to be reckoned with and will spend big money to win. It is likely that Torey Krug will be the only big-name star signed this season. However, the 2023 Blues team is sure to look drastically different to the current line-up.

Torey Krug’s Career

Born in Livonia, Michigan, Torey Krug advanced through the Belle Tire hockey system, playing one season for Indiana before enrolling at Michigan State University. Before playing in the NHL Torey Krug played for the CCHA All-Rookie and First All-Star teams, and was awarded CCHA Player of the Year in 2012.

Torey Krug has played in a staggering 523 NHL games whilst recording a total of 337 points from 67 goals and 270 assists. Before joining the Blues, Krug spent his entire National Hockey League career playing with the Boston Bruins.

He added 40 assists and scored nine goals across 61 games in his last season with the Bruins. Before the pause, Torey Krug was set to exceed the 50-point mark for the fourth straight season.

According to Torey Krug when discussing the deal, he never thought that he would be putting on a Blues jersey and competing for a Stanley Cup with them. He explained how the St. Louis Blues came out of nowhere on the first day of free agency with an offer that he could not refuse.
